Sex Toys and Child Sexual Abuse Prevention

Call for Research Proposals

Note: we are currently fundraising to support this call for research proposals. You may submit before the call is fully funded, but please realize that no grant may be awarded unless sufficient funding is raised.

Prostasia Foundation (a California registered charity, EIN 82-4969920) is administering a call for proposals for research into the effects of the use of sex toys, specifically dolls or robots, by those with a sexual attraction towards minors. Research into this understudied topic could inform current public debates over whether such toys should be prohibited by law, on the assumption that they would have a negative impact on rates of sexual offending. However a contrary hypothesis is that in some cases, the availability of toys may provide a safe, private sexual outlet for some people who would otherwise be at risk of turning their attention towards actual minors. This research should test these hypotheses.

Prostasia Foundation will contribute towards funding or co-funding one research proposal to be conducted over a 12 month period commencing in the quarter after the deadline closes. Funding may be applied towards research activities including data collection and necessary travel. Funding should not be used to cover indirect institutional expenses or the salary of the principal investigator, but may be used towards paying for a research assistant if necessary. Grants will be paid to the principal investigator’s institution unless alternative arrangements are made. We welcome proposals that would be co-funded by the researcher’s institution or a third-party donor.

Proposals should contain:

  • A cover page containing the applicant’s contact details and the amount applied for.
  • A single paragraph abstract.
  • A project summary of up to five pages, describing the rationale for the research proposal, the research methods and analytical approach, the activities to be conducted and the expected outputs.
  • Single-paragraph biographies of the investigators and a list of their relevant publications.
  • A timeline for completion of the research.
  • An estimated budget with a column explaining the purpose or rationale for each budget item.

The successful applicant is expected to submit one final report detailing the activities and results of the research and the expenditure of the project budget. In addition, it is expected that a research paper will be submitted to a relevant highly-ranked scholarly journal as one of the outputs of the project.

Proposals are to be submitted to [email protected]. The deadline for proposals will be announced once the call has been funded. An external peer review process will be employed to evaluate the proposals. Prostasia Foundation reserves the right to require revisions to proposals in the event that the CREEPER Act (H.R. 4655) passes the United States Senate.
